I may grant usage rights for the use of our images in "for profit" applications but I usually ask for a fair market price. Non-profit use of our images is often granted but in either case ask permission.

Unauthorized reproduction of our work which intended to make money or is included in a money making project is NOT OK. If you'd like to use our photographs anywhere on the Web or

Artists are welcome to use these photos as a basis for a drawing or painting in exchange for a credit. If an image of the artwork is displayed on the Web, credit should be a hyperlink to http://www.lockard.info with a note "Partially based on a photo from http://www.lockard.info". Otherwise the same note can be used in a printed description of the work.

There are acceptable uses of our work. If you want to print our pictures to cover a stain on your wall or use them in a homework assignment, that's fine. Computer wallpaper etc is acceptable but only for your own personal use.

Photographs do not need a copyright notice on them to be protected by copyright law. All original works are copyrighted as soon as they are created. They do not need to be registered to be covered by copyright law.

Many, many times I have discovered people who have copied our work (writing, images etc.) to enhance there Web sites. Many people just do not understand what copyright is all about. In some cases it was just poor judgment and inexperience with such things. In others cases it was, well...read on.

Occasionally, I search for our images through Google's image search. I regularly check our web server logs to see where people and how people are getting (and linking) to our site.

I have regularly found bloggers linking to images on our site. This is not acceptable. Please copy the image to your own file space. Feel free to use our photographs with a hyperlinked credit on every page where one of our photos appears. Acceptable HTML is

That way people know who took the picture and also can find our on-line copyright statement. You do not need to pay for usage. Just build the best Web site you can and give it back to the community.

I've confronted at least a dozen people about copying our work. Most remove work they've copied when I ask them. Some drag their feet, or try to get away with just changing our work a bit. Very few write back or offer apologies. The ones who do respond, often blame someone else.

If you see one of my pictures in a magazine or a Web page and there is no credit, then it is almost surely unauthorized. If you are the first person to tell me about it, I'll send you a free print for your wall.
